Nice description, it echoes my childhood, too. Although in our home, even communion and wedding banquets were not held in restaurants, we gathered as a family and cooked and served and ate at home. It was at an older age that the younger members of the family learned to "go to restaurants"
For key festivities such as those you mentioned, we always went to restaurants as nobody had space to host a large party. Weddings in particular are always big things in Italy. I must say, it is also a way to show up, even though this might be more true the further South you go in Italy.
It's always interesting to read about what other people ate growing up and whether or not they ate out. My husband hardly ate out and had to eat much of the same foods. While my mom was a great cook and we ate out sometimes. It felt like a nice balance. These days I enjoy eating out but I do get sick of it as I prefer my own cooking!
I love eating out and try new food or have dishes I cannot do at home. But I also think that my own cooking is often better than most places, and healthier ;p. These days it has become very expensive to eat outside in Berlin. I was so surprised that during our trip to Italy, we had the most delicious and high quality food (like, home made bread, good quality meat) cheaper than in Germany. Nowadays in Berlin they serve you large portions to make up for the expensive price, but as I cannot eat so much at one meal, I end eating only the half or a little more. Even though I can take home what is left, I would rather have a cheaper and smaller meal.
Right now, I feel the trend in Siem Reap is to maximize profit. So what this means is a restaurant will change their menu, raise the price, and downsize the quality. Not all restaurants, of course, but we’ve noticed this with a couple and it’s been disappointing. It is so much better to eat at home! But eating out can be a nice treat sometimes, too.
